What is Pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis is commonly known as a sore throat. It is an inflammation of the pharynx, which is located at the back of the throat. Pharyngitis may be caused by viral (e.g. common cold) or bacterial (e.g. strep throat) infections. Viral infections are the most common underlying culprits of sore throat. Pharyngitis is contagious in nature. The period for which one stays contagious depends on the root cause of the condition. If it is caused by a viral infection, the contagious period lasts until the fever runs out. On the other hand, if the reason is a bacterial infection, one is generally considered contagious from its onset until the completion of 24 hours of medication. Usually, Pharyngitis peaks around 3-5 days of the infection and usually subsides within 10 days. But if the infection lasts for long time or recurs, then it needs medical attention.
