What is Insomnia?

Insomnia (also called sleeplessness) is a medical condition that inhibits a person from falling or staying asleep. It is a sleep disorder which can be both short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic). Generally, short-term or acute insomnia lasts from 1 night to a few weeks. If the condition becomes chronic, then it can extend to 3 nights a week for more than 3 months. People suffering from Insomnia are likely to encounter daytime fatigue, mood swings and irritation.

Insomnia can be classified into 4 categories:

Primary Insomnia means a person is having problems that are not directly associated with any other health condition or problem.

Secondary Insomnia occurs due to external factors, such as a health condition (like asthma, depression, arthritis, heartburn, etc.), pain, medication or substance abuse (e.g. - alcohol).

Acute Insomnia can be short term & can last for one night to a few weeks.

Chronic Insomnia lasts for a long time i.e. when a person has trouble sleeping at least three nights a week for three months or longer.
