What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining of sinuses (cavities within our skull) that are filled with air and located in and around our forehead and nose. When these cavities become blocked and filled with fluid, germs like bacteria, viruses and fungi can grow, causing an infection. This leads to inflammation and accumulation of pus. Due to lack of drainage, this pus builds up pressure and supports further infection within the affected sinus.

Sinusitis can be of different types –acute infection, sub-acute infection, chronic infections and non-infectious. But generally, it can be classified into two main categories – 1) Acute Sinusitis 2) Chronic Sinusitis. Acute Sinusitis only happens for a short time, and Chronic Sinusitis can last for months. The inflammation of the sinus can be triggered by a viral infection, allergies or any chemical irritation.

Other Types of Sinusitis
  • Sub-acute Sinusitis: It generally lasts for a period of 4 to 12 weeks
  • Recurrent Sinusitis: This type of Sinusitis occurs several times throughout a year
