About 90% of adults experience Sinusitis at some point in their lifetime. If the infection becomes severe, it can invite several other issues. Generally, it is not contagious but can be unpleasant for the sufferer. However, through proper treatment and medications, the irritation and trouble caused by Sinusitis can be resolved.

What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses –(cavities within our skull) that are filled with air and located in and around our forehead and nose. When these cavities become blocked and filled with fluid, germs like bacteria, viruses and fungi can grow, causing an infection. This leads to inflammation and accumulation of pus. Due to lack of drainage, this pus builds up pressure and supports further infection within the affected sinus. Sinusitis can be of different types –acute, sub-acute, chronic, infected and non-infectious. But generally, it can be classified into two main categories - 1) Acute Sinusitis 2) Chronic Sinusitis. Acute Sinusitis only happens for a short time, and chronic Sinusitis can last for months. The inflammation of the sinus can be triggered by a viral infection, allergies or any chemical irritation.

Other Types of Sinusitis
  • Sub-acute Sinusitis: It generally stays during the period of 4 to 12 weeks
  • Recurrent Sinusitis: This type of Sinusitis happens several times throughout a year
