Greying of hair is a condition often associated with the elderly only. However, it has now become a common occurrence to find youngsters of mid-teens & mid-twenties walking around with tufts of grey hair.

What is Premature Greying?

Our hair follicles have pigmentation cells called Melanocytes, containing the pigment Melanin. These cells are responsible for giving our hair the colour it naturally has. The more the production of melanin in our hair, the darker is our hair colour. Change in hair colour occurs when melanin ceases to be produced in the hair root. New sets of hair emerging from such roots grow without colour; this is called greying of hair or achromotrichia. This condition becomes more prominent as we age.

Causes and Risk
Factors of Premature Greying

A family history of early white hair growth is one of the risk factors of Premature Greying

It may happen due to lack of a well-balanced diet and proper nutrition

Deficiency of Vitamin B12 plays a major role in premature greying of hair

Thyroid problems or any major health issue also cause such a condition

Due to excessive stress, the condition may appear

Smoking can affect the hair badly and may lead to grey hair

Frequent use of hair dye or styling products can cause Premature Greying

Signs & Symptoms of Premature Greying

The primary symptom of grey hair is the gradual loss of hair colour, typically starting at the temples and spreading to the crown & other areas of the scalp, over time. However, there are several associated signs and symptoms to watch out for.

Change in texture: Grey hair may often have a different texture than pigmented hair, typically feeling coarser and drier.

Thinning: Grey hair appears thinner than pigmented hair due to change in the hair follicle and a decrease in melanin production.

Patchy distribution: In some cases, grey hair may appear in isolated patches rather than being evenly spread across the scalp.

Complications of Premature Greying

  • The condition may result in pattern baldness over time.
  • Could be a precursor of serious underlying health issues such as heart diseases, thyroid disorders, etc.
