What is Constipation?

Constipation refers to difficulty in passing stool as well as infrequent or incomplete passage of stool. It occurs when someone has difficulty emptying the large bowel and the stool becomes hard and dry. If it persists for several weeks, it can turn into chronic constipation.

Eating foods low in fibre, dehydration and not doing enough exercise can be responsible for causing constipation. People who spend several days or weeks in bed or sit for a prolonged period of time may have a higher risk of constipation. Regularly drinking enough water can help reduce the chance of having constipation.

  • Drink adequate water to keep your stool soft and easy to pass.
  • Add magnesium-rich diet like flaxseeds, legumes, bananas and nuts to address constipation.
  • Indulge yourself in regular exercise as it helps the food to move through the large intestine.
  • Avoid over-the-counter drugs, as many drugs are responsible for causing constipation.
  • Take Psyllium husk or Isabgol with a glass of warm water or milk as it improves gut movement.
