10 Herbs that are effective in Ayurvedic treatment of Fatty Liver

Today’s modern lifestyle has encouraged numerous health conditions of which, fatty liver is quite a common disease. It occurs due to collection of excessive fat around the liver.

The condition can be both alcoholic and non alcoholic fatty liver. If untreated, the disease can lead to greater inflammation, scarring, or even cirrhosis of the liver.

Herbs Used In the Treatment of Fatty Liver

With the combination of the right herbs and lifestyle changes, one can treat the condition and prevent further complications. Here are some of the useful herbal remedies that have an abundance of health benefits.

Kasni (Cichorium intybus)

Kasani is also known as Chicory that helps to manage several liver conditions. The herb acts as a liver tonic and prevents the complications of fatty liver disease. Kasni roots are used to reduce inflammation and thus it is beneficial for liver disorders like hepatitis, jaundice, hepatomegaly, congestion of liver, fatty liver etc. The properties also help to protect the liver from cirrhosis and increase bile and bile production.

Chirata  (Swertia chirayita)

Enriched with hepatoprotective and blood-purifying properties, Chirata removes toxin from the liver and helps in regenerating new liver cells.  Besides, the anti-inflammatory properties present in it help the liver to fight against inflammation. By increasing the secretion of bile, it balances the liver enzymes and improves its functioning.

Bhumi Amla  (Phyllanthus niruri)

Bhumi Amla or Phyllanthus niruri is one of the most effective remedies for liver conditions. Enriched with hepatoprotective, antiviral and antioxidant properties, the herb is effective for liver disorders like hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, fatty liver conditions. Due to its detoxification components, it helps cleansing liver by removing toxins from it.

Guduchi  (Tinospora cordifolia)

Guduchi is a famous herbal medicine that holds innumerable medicinal properties. It is known to be a natural detoxifying agent and thus keeps our liver toxin-free. Apart from that, it is also suitable to keep the blood clean with its blood-cleansing property. Guduchi shows promising results in liver ailments and may combat jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver disorders. While it’s certainly beneficial, one should consume it under an Ayurvedic practitioner’s guidelines. Self-medication, by any means, is not recommended.

Bhringraj  (Eclipta prostrata)

Apart from being useful in other ailments, Bhringraj can be utilized as an effective liver tonic to manage conditions like fatty liver. Besides, it is also helpful in managing any complications like liver enlargement or Jaundice. The main reason behind its beneficial effect on the liver remains the potency to balance Pitta content. The herb encourages better bile flow and protects it from toxins.

Kutki   (Picorrhiza kurroa)

Kutki or Picrorhiza kurroa, is known for having a cooling effect in Ayurveda. Apart from being a bit bitter on the palate, the herb has shown good results on managing liver and gallbladder related conditions. It also has a cleansing effect that helps in keeping the liver toxin-free. Kutki can be used to treat Fatty liver complications. It also increases our appetite and balances enzyme secretion.

Amla  (Phyllanthus emblica)

Amla or Indian gooseberry is among those natural elixirs that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. By flushing out toxins from the body, it protects the liver from harmful materials.  It also increases the digestive fire and maintains the proper functioning of the organ. It can further help to enhance the liver condition and prevent metabolic dysfunction, inflammation and hepatic steatosis.

Ghrit Kumari (Aloe vera)

A very common plant available in almost all households today is Aloe vera. As it is enriched with phytonutrients, it hydrates the liver and detoxifies it to function properly. Researches show that the extract of aloe vera is very effective for treating liver disorders like jaundice, fatty liver. Not only that, it helps in balancing acid production and controls enzyme secretion. However, one should do so under the guidance of an Ayurvedic doctor.

Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa)

Punarnava is also recognised as Red Spiderling. The hepatoprotective and hepatostimulative properties present in Punarnava helps to keep liver disorders at bay. It also revives the liver functionality and keeps it healthy. Punarnava holds anti-oxidant and hepatoprotective activity. It prevents liver cell damage that occurs due to free radical.

Sharpunkha  (Tephrosia purpurea)

A common traditional herb, Sharpunkha or Tephrosia purpurea, has enormous effects in several health conditions. It is helpful for treating ailments that concern the liver and spleen. As the herb has anti-inflammatory ingredients, it helps to reduce inflammation of liver. Besides, it encourages formation of new liver cells as well.
