10 Herbs that are effective in Ayurvedic treatment of Gas and Acidity

Our day-to-day lifestyle practices and the intake of a variety of unhealthy foods play a major role in the contribution to gas formation. This may further cause acid reflux or acidity. However, bringing slight changes in the lifestyle habitats can help in dealing with such issues. For instance, one may take small meals at regular intervals to cope with the symptoms.

Ayurvedic herbs used in the treatment of Gas and Acidity

Ayurveda plays a very important role to deal with the issues of Gas Formation and Hyperacidity. It balances the Pitta dosha which is responsible for such problems. Various traditional herbs have been made use for treating these conditions.

  1. Yashtimadhu

Yashtimadhu is an Ayurvedic herb used to treat a variety of symptoms such as gas and acidity. The medicinal herb helps in the reduction of the gastric secretion of the acid reflux thus easing the pain and other discomfort occurring in the stomach lining. It has the properties of analgesic, antacid, and anti-inflammation which give relief from the discomfort of the stomach. Also the inclusion of glycyrrhizin with its compounds, Yashtimadhu is a wonderful herb for the inflammatory digestive system, acidity, gastroesophageal acid reflux, and heartburn.

Pudina helps in the easy digestion of the food by enzymes. It is enriched with antioxidants, menthol, and phytonutrients. It calms the stomach cramping as well as prevents flatulence and acidity. It also aids in the process of digestion and relieves gastric discomfort due to its antispasmodic and carminative properties. Even the leaves of Pudina help in reduction of bloating and indigestion.

The seeds of the Ayurvedic herb of fennel relax the muscles of the intestines, which removes gas and acidity. Also, it allows for the soothing of the muscles located in the intestines that give relief from gassiness that occurred due to acid reflux or constipation. The major component of these seeds is the Anethole which soothes the irritation in our intestines.

Consumption of the carom seeds or ajwain is considered as a powerful remedy for problems with gas formation, indigestion, acid reflux or acidity. It is believed that ajwain does wonder for the pain in the stomach and indigestion. It is a natural remedy for problems like acid reflux. The presence of biochemical thymol and the active enzymes within the ajwain helps in relieving from any type of gastric issues.

Haritaki is another important Ayurvedic herb that is enriched with antioxidants which helps in protecting one’s body from chronic diseases. A churna prepared from it deals with the gas formation, several digestive issues and further helps in the prevention of gastric and peptic ulcers. It helps in proper absorption of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. Moreover, its antioxidant properties reduce the risk for the development of stomach ulcers.

Coriander seeds or leaves are very helpful for treating gas and acidity. It works by stimulating the gut and increasing the secretion of digestive juices and enzymes. People suffering from constipation, intestinal gas, or indigestion may also use this Ayurvedic herb for treating their conditions.

Garlic helps to ease the inflammation that occurs in the lining of the stomach as well as the oesophagus. Apart from treating various health issues, it treats the gaseous problem. It has the property of healing which aids in proper digestion. Even it can be added in soups or meals for helping in the reduction of gaseous formation.  

  1. Elaichi

Elaichi or cardamom works as a traditional herb in the stimulation of digestion and helps in relieving spasms in the stomach by soothing its inner walls. Also, it helps to get rid of the adverse effects of extra acid that is secreted in the stomach. You may take elaichi if you feel the striking with acidity but before taking that you must consult with an experienced doctor.

It includes the phenolic constituents which help in relieving the irritation that occurred due to gastrointestinal infection and even lessens the gastric contractions. Amla or amlaki is a Sattvik eatable. Amalaki has the capability of calming our body and helps in fighting against acidity. It is highly loaded with vitamin C that helps to heal the injured lining of one’s stomach and esophagus.It is also effective for neutralizing any kind of acidity in the stomach. It balances agni (digestive fire) and promotes digestion. It is even helpful in reduction of discomfort or burning sensation.
