Dysmenorrhoea

Women today face multiple challenges both at home and workplace as they perform a fine balancing act. As a result, personal health is often ignored by them, leading to various gynaecological problems, like Dysmenorrhoea, which are often chronic in nature. Being too embarrassed, women try to avoid discussing such issues. Dysmenorrhoea or painful periods is a medical condition in which excessive pain during menstruation interferes with daily activities. While some pain, cramping, and discomfort during menstrual periods are normal, excessive pain is not. Therefore, we need to be aware of the problem and its natural solution. 
Symptoms of Dysmenorrhoea often begin immediately following ovulation and can last until the end of menstruation. The main symptom is pain concentrated in the lower abdomen, in the umbilical region or the supra-pubic region. The nature of pain may vary – including sharp, throbbing, dull, nauseating, burning, or shooting pain. It may also radiate to the thighs and lower back. Other symptoms often co-occurring with menstrual pain include nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, headache, dizziness, disorientation, hypersensitivity to sound, light, smell and touch, fainting, and fatigue. Dysmenorrhoea may coexist with excessively heavy blood loss, known as Menorrhagia. Primary Dysmenorrhoea occurs in women who experience pain just before and during menstruation, but who are otherwise healthy. Women who have had normal periods that later become painful may have Secondary Dysmenorrhoea. This condition is usually accompanied by a problem affecting the uterus or other pelvic organs. Menstrual pain is caused by hormone-like substances called prostaglandins which trigger muscle contractions to help the uterus expel menstrual matter. Some women are at a higher risk of having painful menstrual periods. The risk factors include: being under the age of 20; having a family history of painful periods; smoking; having irregular periods; never bearing a child and having experienced puberty before the age of 11. The most common cause of Secondary Dysmenorrhoea is Endometriosis, which can happen in approximately 70% of adolescents with Dysmenorrhoea.
There are few medical treatments available that are helpful in Dysmenorrhoea. These provide temporary relief from the symptoms, but the condition generally recurs after some time. Such treatments have adverse effects as well. However, effective solution has been achieved through Fundamentals of Ayurveda, Unani and Therapeutic Yoga which is completely safe and natural.
